Should I book a Psychiatrist or a Therapist at Roppongi Clinic?

A common issue many people face is not knowing where to go to receive mental health care.

Their mind is struggling, but they’re unsure where or how to seek help.

At Roppongi Clinic, we offer both psychiatry (by a medical doctor) and psychotherapy (by a psychologist), which can be confusing for first-time patients. Understanding the difference between the two can help you choose the right starting point.

What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with the training and expertise to distinguish mental health issues from physical conditions, such as heart diseases or thyroid problems.

In Japan, psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication based on your symptoms. However, they typically do NOT conduct therapy sessions.

If you think you may need medication, an official diagnosis, or time off work due to mental disorders, we recommend booking a consultation with a psychiatrist.

Psychiatric consultations in Japan are covered by National Health Insurance, so remember to bring your NHI card!

A therapist, on the other hand, is not a medical doctor. They are trained professionals who treat mental health conditions through verbal communication and other alternative methods. Unlike in some other countries, therapists in Japan cannot prescribe medication and therapy is typically not covered by insurance.

Therapy is usually talk-based treatment focused on exploring your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. You don’t need a diagnosis or a referral from a doctor to begin therapy.

It is highly effective for treating conditions such as anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, eating disorders, and addiction.

Roppongi Clinic also offers ADHD coaching to help people with ADHD better deal with their symptoms and challenges.

Many people also seek therapy for personal growth, stress management, processing past experiences, or navigating relationship challenges. Therapy is for anyone who wants to be heard or get more clarity, and it can be a valuable tool not only for recovery but also for maintaining good mental health.

If you’re still unsure which one to book, we recommend booking a first consultation with one of our psychiatrists. The doctor can then guide you on the best course of treatment, which may include therapy.
