What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that starts in childhood, which often manifests as:
- restlessness,
- inability to focus, sitting still, finishing certain tasks, and
- acting impulsively.
It can seriously affect the person’s quality of life, as they can feel insufficient, inadequate or hopeless, and it can lead to other mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. It is a life-long condition that can come and go, and change over time depending on the case.
This disorder mainly presents itself in three different ways:
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive
- Predominantly Inattentive
- Combined Presentation
With the right treatment, the condition can be effectively managed and its effects can be controlled enough that the person who has ADHD can live a normal life.
Common ADHD symptoms:
It is important to note that ADHD may look different in men and women. Each case might be different but, in general, it can look like:
Hyperactive / Impulsive Type:
- Impulsivity in decision-making and actions
- Restlessness or fidgeting
- Mood swings and emotional reactivity
- Talking excessively or interrupting others
- Internal restlessness or racing thoughts
Inattentive Type:
- Often distracted by unrelated thoughts
- Feeling overwhelmed or easily distracted
- Difficulty paying attention to details
- Forgetfulness in daily activities
- Hard time listening to the person speaking
- Procrastination and poor time management
Combined Type:
- Combined symptoms of Inattentive Type and Hyperactive / Impulsive Type
