What is Adjustment Disorder?

One global study found that adjustment disorders affect an estimated 2% of people around the world.

Adjustment disorder is an illness in which a specific situation or event causes subjective distress, and the “stressor” results in changes in a person’s mood or behavior. This could happen in response to a change in jobs or after moving to a new place (like Tokyo!). Stress is something we all experience at work, but the causes of stress and our ability to adapt to it vary from person to person.

Symptoms of Adjustment Disorder significantly interfere with social, occupational or educational functioning. These symptoms may include feeling depressed, crying often, feeling anxious or stressed out, trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, feeling irritable, difficulty with daily activities, and withdrawing from family and friends who support you socially. These symptoms start within three months of the stressful event, and can last an especially long time if the stressful event is ongoing (such as being unemployed or disliking your current job).

If you are concerned that you may be suffering from adjustment disorder, please take the “Adjustment Disorder Check” on our website, now available in English. We offer a multitude of English-language Screening Tests that check for symptoms of mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, alcohol dependency, and ADHD. If the results of any one of these tests leave you feeling concerned, a good first step towards recovery is booking an appointment with a counselor or psychiatrist at our clinic.

At Roppongi Clinic, we offer services in English and can provide same-day appointments to those with busy schedules. We’re open on weekends and holidays. To learn more, please visit our English HomePage.

Why is Adult ADHD So Hard to Diagnose?

Until more recently, and for a variety of reasons, females have not been diagnosed with or treated for ADHD as frequently as males.

While symptoms of ADHD typically begin in childhood, proper diagnosis often eludes many people until adulthood. This often makes ADHD difficult to diagnose; while symptoms of hyperactivity will sometimes decrease in adult patients, struggles with impulsiveness, restlessness and difficulty paying attention may continue.

ADHD is even harder to diagnose for adult women. Symptoms of ADHD in women are more likely to show up as inattentiveness, rather than hyperactivity or impulsiveness. Women with ADHD often struggle staying organized or focused at home or work, feel as though they’re always running late, or significantly underestimate the time it takes to complete a task. Women also tend to be better at hiding their symptoms than men, meaning they often go undiagnosed or receive misdiagnoses.

If you are concerned that you may be suffering from ADHD, please take the “ADHD Check” on our website, available in English. We offer a multitude of English-language Screening Tests that check for symptoms of mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, alcohol dependency, and adjustment disorder. If the results of any one of these tests leave you feeling concerned, a good first step towards treatment is booking an appointment with our clinic’s psychiatrist to discuss your symptoms and possible treatments.

At Roppongi Clinic, we offer services in English and can provide same-day appointments to those with busy schedules. We’re open on weekends and holidays. To learn more, please visit our English Homepage.

Feeling S.A.D.?

Excessive Paper Anxiety?

For a country so famous for robots and futuristic technology, Japan’s love affair with paper lives on. Cash payments dominate; paper packaging is complex and diverse; fax is still widely used; exchanging business cards is a mandatory professional ritual; and businesses and government offices are often drowning in paperwork.

For a country so famous for robots and futuristic technology, Japan’s love affair with paper lives on. Cash payments dominate; paper packaging is complex and diverse; people still widely use fax; exchanging business cards is a mandatory professional ritual; and businesses and government offices are often drowning in paperwork.

This system can be very difficult for expats coming from the West to get used to, and it only adds to the stress and anxiety of navigating a new environment. One of the ways to decrease this stress is to utilize technologies that reduce excessive use of paper, such as services that convert your mail to a digital platform. This can make your bills and other mail much more familiar to you, and therefore easier to manage.

Of course, excessive paperwork doesn’t cause all stress. Other ways to decrease your levels of stress are to exercise, connect with the people you care about, and make time for fun and relaxation. Eating and sleeping well can also do well to reduce your levels of stress.

If you are concerned that you may be suffering from persistent stress, please take the “Stress Check” on our website (currently only available in Japanese).

To schedule an appointment in English, please email us at @roppongi.clinic.english@gmail.com or visit our English Bookings Page.

Depression and Diet are Actually Related

Did you know that mental illnesses such as depression can be prevented or improved by paying attention to your diet? The gut and brain are closely connected, and when certain bacteria are found in your gut, they can put you at an increased risk of depression.

Did you know that paying attention to your diet can prevent or improve mental illnesses like depression? The gut and brain have a close connection, and specific gut bacteria can increase your risk of depression. For example, one study found that people who eat a diet high in processed foods had an increased risk of depression 5 years later.

There is a connection between the brain and our gut microbiome (the thousands of bacteria in your gut that help with your digestion), and different foods can alter your gut microbiome. Likewise, adding certain bacteria to your gut can change levels of neurotransmitters in your brain and stress hormone levels throughout your body.

Very processed foods—like sodas, fried foods, high-fat dairy products, or sugary sweets—cause the highest risk of mental health issues. Meanwhile, a Mediterranean-type diet—which is rich with whole grains, beans, vegetables, fruits, fish, and olive oil—has been endorsed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as a great way to improve your mood and lower your chances for depression.

If you are concerned that you may be suffering from depression, please take our English-language Depression Screening Check. We offer a multitude of English-language Screening Tests that check for symptoms of mental illnesses like anxiety, alcohol dependency, and ADHD.
